After months of discussion and indecision on our part, we finally committed to purchasing 2.5 acres in Alfred, Florida. It is understandable that some might question the geography or weather patterns, but the only way to overcome fear is to meet it head on. One good Saturday morning, we embarked on a long drive from Tampa to see our land, which we purchased on faith in February 2022. GPS navigation made locating the land coordinates quite easy. But we were more surprised to learn that this quaint town nestled atop what seemed like the highest point in Florida—with four nearby lakes: Compass Lake in the Hills, Round Lake, Silver Lake North, and McCormick Lake. Huge bodies of water equipped with boat ramps and dock slips. Other amenities and attractions include cabins, tent sites with power and water, pavilions, clubhouse, swimming pool and a restaurant/bar, driving range, and disk golf course. Who really knows what else hides amongst the picturesque winding roads with trees reminiscent of a national park. We saw pricy homes and beautiful spaces for a family garden. The roads were mostly paved, but those areas not yet developed had a mixture of packed red dirt with easements and drainage. This could only mean that infrastructure development was well planned. Certainly, there is access to electricity and water, but we are not yet sure how far from our property. Work in progress.
